It's a central tenet of many spiritual traditions that people must acknowledge the darkness in which they live before they can experience the light or attain a state of grace. From the sinner's prayer, to the 12 steps, to the acceptance of the monkey mind, to the first confession, the spiritual journey starts with awareness of darkness.
