Another popular Texas wildflower is the Indian Paintbrush, also called Entireleaf Indian Paintbrush, Texas Paintbrush, or Scarlet Paintbrush. They usually bloom alongside Texas Bluebonnets. Their "flowers" are actually not made by flower petals but instead are made up of bracts. Bracts are leaves that can have color and grow right below the actual flower of the plant. Indian Paintbrush flowers themselves aren't very noticeable since their bright red or orange-tipped skirts distract your attention.
I love the colour combination. I thought your Texas Bluebonnets looked familiar, but it wasn't until I saw the leaf in this shot that I recognised them as lupins.
@kategoring Thank you for your sweet comment, Kate! Since starting this project, I have learned so much about so many different things . . . today I learned all about bracts when I checked online for Indian Paintbrush information. All these years I've been admiring these flowers and not once did I look up any special information about them. And so . . . I'm happy I could share that info with you! :-)
@woodlandsphotog Thanks for your comment and fav, Richard! I think it is still early in the season for them. I found these on highway 281 right outside Blanco. There were also some blooming in Johnson City. I made several enjoyable country road day trips this week looking for these wildflowers. I absolutely love this time of year in Texas! :-)
