Scorpion by gaylewood

Scorpion

Scorpions are a common sight around our house and property. I learned early on to always shake my shoes out before putting them on. This one was crawling across the living room floor this morning. I caught it, chilled it in the fridge for awhile and was able to get some shots before it warmed up and was active again. When the tail and stinger started moving I knew my photo time with this scorpion was coming to an end.
Great picture! Bet that could give you a nasty nip!

Thar is absolutely crazy!!!!! Just not something we see here! I think I'll be pushed to top that!!! Ha ha! This site opens your eyes not only to photography but to the huge diverse world we share! My little English life seems so sheltered!

@cmp Thanks for commenting, Catherine! I have only been stung once and yes, it was quite painful for about a day.

I have a friend who moved to Arizona last year. Her and her kids go out at night with a black light looking for scorpions, something she never in a million years thought she would do! Love how you captured the details on this one.

Great shot...I don't think I could cope with those critters :)

@janemartin Your comment made me laugh, Jane! :-) My parents originally bought this house/property in 1976 and in 40 years I've only been stung once. I always keep an eye out for them because you never know when or where one will appear. I won't go into detail about some of the strange places they have appeared. :-) Thank you for your comment and fav!

@dyanstevens Thanks for commenting, Dyan! I've never actually gone out looking for them at night. It would be cool to see them glowing! Once while working out in the yard I picked up a large rock and uncovered a mother scorpion and hundreds of babies. That was quite cool! :-)

@seattlite Thanks for your comment, Gloria! I still give out a bit of a startled scream when I see one...like this morning. :-)

I'm glad we don't have them here but you seem to have learned to live with them. Great shot.

I am so pleased I do not have to live with scorpions, spiders are bad enough. You seem to cope with them very well. I will remember the tip about chilling them if I ever come across one :) Great to see the detail so close up. Wonderful capture.

Terrific shot of it and very interesting how you chilled it! A Fav. We don't see them much here in eastern Texas.

Wow - you are my new hero! Way to go Gayle, fabulous shot.

Wonderfully detailed capture Gayle, fav. I'm not unhappy with the fact that I will probably never find one on my living room floor, or anywhere else around here ...

Oh my! What an amazing shot!
April 16th, 2016
Wow fortunately we don't have them here you are brave

The scorpion looks somehow different than I imagined - opaque. I am amazed by your casual description of discovering and chilling your scorpion before getting it to model for you. You paint a picture so alien to anything we would be comfortable with here in UK. I'm with others - pleased not to be likely to encounter this scene. respect!

I love your great approach to getting this shot - don't think I'd ever had thought of chilling it - but I see now how that could work. Wonderful detail and such a fantastic close-up. I've enjoyed reading the comments from those who don't have these creatures.

i suppose if i found one i would have to catch it before the cats did, but not something i would like.
April 17th, 2016
oh creepy! cool shot, I would really really freak out if I found that in my shoe lol
April 17th, 2016
Oh boy, I'd never have thought of popping it in the fridge for a while!!! Super idea and very cool capture!

Great capture. I've often hear of people chilling creepy crawlies to photograph them. It's not something I've tried yet. I seem to have a lack of suitable subjects :)

Nicely done. Glad we don't have to deal with those up here

@shirleybankfarm Thank you, Shirley! I appreciate your comment! :-)

@woodlandsphotog Thanks so much for your comment and fav, Richard! I had read about chilling insects, spiders, etc. but this was the first time I tried it. It definitely worked and didn't harm the scorpion at all. I have to admit, normally we kill them immediately when we find them in the house but after taking the photos of this one, I didn't want to kill it so I took it outside and let it go. :-)

@kategoring Kate, you make me laugh! Thanks so much for your comment! :-)

@tristansmum Thanks so much for your comment and fav, Stephanie! I certainly wouldn't choose to have scorpions around and it's nice to not have to worry about them during the summer/fall months when we're in Manitoba. :-)

@helenhall Thank you for your comment and fav, Helen! I had to smile at your comment...you make it sound like I truly live on the wild and dangerous side! :-)

@milaniet Thanks so much for your comment, Milanie! I had read about the chilling process, this was my first try at it and it really did work well. It didn't harm the scorpion at all. Yes, I enjoyed all the comments also! :-)
April 18th, 2016
@chard Thanks for commenting, Richard! Yes, I'm sure your cats would have a fun time with them! :-)
April 18th, 2016
@shylaine3304 Thanks for commenting, Erika! Oh, yes! You would definitely freak out and scream if you found one in your shoe! I still scream when I find one! :-)

@jamibann Thanks for your comment, Issi! I had read about the chilling process, this was my first try at it and it really did work well! I can't imagine getting close up shots of a scorpion without doing something like this. Any other time, we kill them immediately when we find them in the house. :-)

@merrelyn Thanks so much for commenting, Merrelyn! The chilling process really does work well, this was my first try at it. If you're ever in south Texas, I can help you find some suitable subjects. :-)

@bkbinthecity Thanks for your comment, Brian! I'm glad we don't have to deal with scorpions when we're in Manitoba for the summer/fall months. :-)

@gaylewood Thanks for the offer Gayle, I'm not sure if I'll ever make it to south Texas :)

Love this story! I never knew that's what you had to do to get the photo opportunities. Hubby got stung on his foot when he got up to the loo one night. He said the pain was like a red hot poker piercing his foot. Ice packs, analgesia & compression & all was good after a few hours.
April 18th, 2016
@365projectorgjenfurj Thank you so much for commenting, Jen! Yes, a piercing red hot poker perfectly describes the pain when a scorpion stings you. Not fun at all. :-(
