This groundhog appeared in the yard yesterday when I was taking photos of squirrels and totally took me by surprise. I don't see groundhogs very often so I'm glad I managed to get a shot of him for my 30 Days Wild challenge.
Oh! Lubbock has Prairie Dog Town, when I was growing up it was a real highlight of the day to go watch the prairie dogs and the little owls that hung out with them! Growing up in a lubbock was pretty low key! They are sweet but oh so destructive. The cotton farmers in West Texas have a time controlling them!
I imagine he may be one of the few (if not the only) groundhog in the 30DaysWild - what a neat shot. You don't get many opportunities at these guys - at least when they're not pitching dirt up from underneath!
So I had heard of Groundhog day, but not really factored in that the ground hog was a real thing! I love the beautiful softness of his coat that you have captured here, that rather aloof expression and the way he is looking straight at you.
@jamibann Thank you so much, Issi! Groundhogs and prairie dogs are different. Here is some information I found online summarizing the main differences and the link to the site:
1.Groundhogs and prairie dogs are both members of the same family.
2.They are similar in coloration and body shape, though the groundhog is much bigger.
3.Prairie dogs and groundhogs both live in burrows, but prairie dogs will connect their burrows to huge colonies while groundhogs prefer to live on their own.
4.Groundhogs are found all over North America and combat the cold by hibernating whereas prairie dogs prefer more temperate flatlands.
@gaylewood thank you Gayle! Very interesting. I remember seeing lots of prairie dogs in South Dakota when I visited there a few years back.they are quite comical!
