Currently, this is the dominant hummingbird at my feeders. I've learned through observations and researching online that hummingbirds are quite fearless when it comes to protecting their food source. This one sits up in the trees watching and if any other hummers try to approach a feeder, he's right there immediately chasing them away. I've read lots of different suggestions for what to do when one alpha hummer is keeping all the others from the feeders. I've tried increasing the number of feeders, I'm up to four feeders now, and I've separated them in a way that makes it difficult for the one alpha hummer to keep an eye on all the feeders at the same time. So far, it seems to be working...more and more hummingbirds are now coming to the feeders.
This would be so wonderful to see. Wonderful narrative to go with your capture of this alpha hummer. Great tactics in use to share the food around Gayle. Wonderful capture. Fav.
a beautiful photo Gayle so sharp and colourful. How interesting about the alpha birds. I would love to see a Humming Bird but we dont have them in Australia.
What a great picture!
I have put my feeder out and had to refill several times and although I have seen one (same colors as yours) I have not been able to take a picture.
