These 2 "mint" postage stamps were issued to mark the Xth Olympiad held in Los Angeles, Calf.
(I appreciate and have enjoyed your recent comments, Favs, and follows. :))
Read on for VERY cool info: The 1932 Summer Olympics were held in the midst of The Great Depression - less than half the nations and athletes from the 1928 Olympics could make the trip. - In 1923, Los Angeles was chosen for the sight of the 1932 Summer Olympics; it was the only U.S. city bid for the honor - 37 nations took part - 1,2606 men, and 126 women participated - there were only 14 sports comprising 116 events - the 1st Olympic Village was built, occupied by male athletes - it was the 1st time a Victory Podium was used - The Rebublic of China was represented for the 1st time (in the summer Olympics) with a single male athlete - there were 29 track and field events, only 6 were for women - there were no gymnastic events for women - Diving had only 4 events, 2 for men, and 2 for women - The top 3 medal winners were: U.S., (103) Italy, (36) and France (19) - {{The medal count was very lopsided because the U.S., the host nation, had the highest number of athletes, 474 while other countries had far, far fewer athletes; many just a handful.}} ART COMPETITIONS were a part of the Olympics; (from 1912-1948) Medals were awarded in Architecture, Literature, Music, Painting, and Sculpture, for works inspired by sport-related themes. THIS YEAR'S XXXXth SUMMER OLYMPICS --204 countries, (NOC's) 10,500 athletes, (est.) 302 events in 26 sports.

Congratulations to all winners, and their competitors, Congratulations to Britain for a stellar showing as the host country - Well Done!! Thank you to all who made the XXXXth Olympiad possible; it was specatauclar!
Greetings! I'm from Connecticut (USA) Photography is one of my lifelong passions (others including gardening, woodworking, history, and being a part...
@carolmw Thanks so much Carol; it's nice to have someone from another country show an interest. (The stamp collection I have is too massive to describe; fortunately it came into the hands of someone who appreciates it on many different levels. I have (mint) vintage stamps from Britain also.....depictions of Queen Victoria, King Edward, Royal Visits to Africa, etc. Your opinion, if you please; do think there would be any interest with my Englsih "mates" if I share any of those??)
Take good care, Les x
How times change! For the first time, every country has fielded women. But in one respect things have stayed the same - British gold medal winners are being celebrated with... postage stamps!
Love your pic and story!
@nicolecampbell Thanks Nic..........History is "the bomb!" These are part of a collection that came to me a while ago. Talk about history! The postage begins in the 1840's........100's and 100's of stamps, all "mint" (mostly U.S.) including air mail, fishing & hunting permits, "revenue" stamps, even Pony Express evelopes, and on. It certainly came into apreciative hands .:)) Oh, and thanks for reading my "magnum opus" haha. Take very good care, Les xx
@janturnbull Boodles of thanks Janet for stopping, reading, ( a lot!) and commenting. Aren't the Olympics just the best! 204 countries, side by side, competing, sharing "dorms", eating together, sitting next to each other at events, socializing ------ and all in Peace! They show us what World Peace can look like. :))) Take good care, Les
Great bit of history represented by these stamps. I believe my own country, Australia, only sent 12 athletes to those games; all they could afford because of the Depression. They ended up bringing back 5 medals, two of which went to women, so not a bad result considering. What a change from those days to these! I'm thinking we should bring back the Arts-related medals...
Wow ... loved your information, Les ... who knew?!! So happy to hear that women got to "join the ranks" and show off their great talents too! Your stamps are amazing. You are very lucky to have them ... one wonders how soon these kind of things will disappear as people write fewer letters (snail mail) and used the computer more. Thanks for sharing.
@glimpses .How wonderful to have a huge collection of stamps.I used to collect from around the world, but now I collect all British First Day Covers(direct from the Royal Mint).I also have some old British stamps, too, but not all in mint condition.I'm sure people would be interested in seeing some of your collection. They would make wonderful collages.I've bagged your idea and posted British commemorative stamps, for this Olympics, today.Hope you don't mind....Best Wishes...Carol.
@carolmw What a kick to find that you collect stamps. I do not collect, but I am passionate about history. And these, well, they are a treasure trove of history! They are a thrill to me; they are a unique indicator of notable people, places, and events - decade by decade. I am indebted to the person who probably worked on the collection for decades. Thanks for your reply, and your encouragement....As for collages - go for it! We could start a "365" thread - "Bring out your stamps!" Best to you, Les x
