Voroneţ Monastery by harvey

Voroneţ Monastery

after a pleasant night train ride from transilvania to north-eastern Romania we rented bikes and biked to two of the famous painted monestaries of Bucovina. These wonderful orthodox churches are completely covered with historic frescos on the outside. Voronet was built in 1488 and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was really cool and the setting was really nice as well. You can read more about the monastery if you like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorone%C5%A3_Monastery
Love the detail!

I am sure that this picture does not to this fresco justice.

This reminds me of the frescoes in the Orthodox churches of Greece. When they were first built, not many people could read, so the walls became their "Good Book". However the ones in Greece are on the inside. I'm amazed these haven't weathered. Cool shot.

This is a place I would like to visit and spend a day looking at those pictures. They seem to be in good condition.
