I was sitting in the kitchen this morning finishing my tea when I heard a familiar whump sound. Occasionally the birds leave the suet cage on the porch and head off in the wrong direction - right into the kitchen window. Usually they are not going fast enough by then to cause much harm. But I found a downy woodpecker sitting stunned on my welcome mat for a lot longer than I would have liked. Eventually my presence spooked her enough to fly to the other end of the porch where I got this shot of her regrouping. The next time I checked, the bird was gone. So I hope that means she recovered enough to go back on her way and will be just fine. :-)
This past week our windows have claimed two waxwings. The third was only stunned so I wrapped it in a towel to keep it warm and it finally flew away. That "whimper" when they hit the glass is a sad sound. Glad that your little guy seems to have survived.
