On the beach at Southwold by helenhall

On the beach at Southwold

Continuing on with my theme - in the absence of anything else to offer. This scene is taken from the pier at Southwold - as was the black and white view shown a few days ago.

The best route from Walberswick to Southwold is by foot - using the little rowing boat ferry to cross the estuary. In fact, from arriving on Friday to leaving on Sunday, we had no need to use the car at all. Walberswick is quiet, and at the end of a no through road. Southwold is a thriving busy seaside resort with just the right amount of amenities, full of charm, iconic colourful beach huts (compulsory photo to follow), well behaved tourists and absolutely no litter.

I think this one is straight, but with the hill and the POV it is difficult to be sure. Question - does the white out/bright light area of sky in contrast to the heavy clouds add to, or detract from this photo? I really don't know if it is a good thing, or a bad thing and would value your honesty .

Very pleasing scene.

Quite lovely, withe a strong sense of scale with the people.

What a picturesque scene!

I think the light is just perfect to bring out the seaside buildings so nicely! Typical English seaside - wouldn't see anything like this in NZ!

i rather like the fact that the left-hand side is quite bright, both sky and water, and then the darker clouds on the right allow the detail of the buildings to come out. all in all, a really lovely english seaside shot

If you use LR, you could take a brush over the bright cloud area and lower the exposure, then see what it does. My eye was definitely drawn to that area first.

One of my favourite places on the east coast, a great place for your short break.

1) The horizon line is slightly tilted, but does not detract from the from the overall shot. It's very minimal but I'm a stickler for that!

2) The white area to me is just a little bright. You could approach lightening it in one of two ways. You could crop the picture down from the bright corner and up from the lower right corner to minimize that area. OR you could convert the shot to black and white and play with the contrast. Sometimes black and white lessens an overly white sky. Kahsia has given you a good way to work with it too.

Beautiful. Looks very inviting.

So much to look at in this photo. I love it. An English seaside photo at its best. I love the row of beach huts. They cost a fortune out here in Australia and you can buy one for the price of a small house.

Agree with @olivetreeann Maybe there is a third possibility: You could try to use a gradual grey filter. Of course you should do that when you take the picture. If you take a picture in RAW, it's even possible afterwards in Photoshop, Silkypics etc.

I like the contrast and ominous grey clouds. It seems that the buildings become the focus, at least for me that is what I am drawn too. It has an old world feel to the capture, yet is modern.

I like the contrast too and I think it makes the buildings stand out. Lovely scene

Another lovely photo. I think the horizon is ever so slightly tilted, but I can see why you had difficulty gauging it. I do find the highlights on the left side of the sky a little overpowering. Other commenters have offered excellent tips for solving that so I won't add my two cents worth.

Except for the clothing, this could so easily be a scene from the 1950s.. the nostalgia rating is very high.. the figures in this charming image are quite Lowry-esque..

to answer your question: the highlights are blown and the contrast between the white and dark clouds is very noticeable but.. better than no shot at all.. Overall i like the feel of the image.. a good image doesn't have to be technically perfect, it just has to impart something to the viewer.. this does that by the bucketful..

A quaint holiday village. I like the light top left - that's how it was and it's lit the village beautifully. You must have come home feeling rejuvenated after this peaceful weekend.

This could be mistaken for an early postcard, a lovely image
