053 - For some time there has been a lot of activity west of York railway station, on an area of land that has been ignored and neglected for a considerable period of time.
The remains of two old railway roundhouses have emerged from all this activity, and for two days the site has been open for visitors to have a closer look. This shot shows one of the roundhouse turntables with tracks radiating from it.
A nearby tent held samples of the remains of everyday life on a steam railway were on display - shovels, metal notices, a brick arch from a steam locomotive and many other items.
Fascinating to wonder what else might be found just below our feet.
I wonder if its going to be developed as part of York's magnificent Railway Museum? But come to think of it, the two sights are some distance from each other.
The current plan is to build a network control centre on the site, while protecting these remains underneath it, and with part of the building having a transparent floor so the remains will be visible. The hope is that some of the artefacts found on the site will be put on display in the museum.
