Footsteps of the Romans

067 - This small quiet little backwater of a street was once one of the four main roads into Eboracum, now known as York. This was the approach into the city from the north-east, the Via Decumania, leading to the headquarters building (the Principia), situated where York Minster now is.

During the 1970's major restoration of the Minster took place, including excavating below the building and putting in foundations. During this work, much evidence of Roman occupation was found.

So for almost 2000 years this road has existed. What stories would it tell us, if it could?
lovely!

Wow.......you can literally walk in the footsteps of history! I visited Roman ruins in Frankfurt Germany many years ago. Impressive.

Yes, the Roman level is several feet below the current level, but it's still there! It's amazing when you look around the York area, there is lots of evidence for the presence of the Romans, though not all the evidence is in the form of physical remains.

@louisefrance

This was one of the four main roads into the city. You can trace the route outside the city walls for about 1/2 mile along a series of roads and alleys, eventually emerging on Huntington Road.

@collin

Thank you - it's easier to get a good shot here on a dull day rather than a bright sunny day, since there are far fewer problems with shadows, particularly that cast by the Minster
