111 ...comes the floods. The Kings Arms on Kings Staith is one of the first properties affected when the River Ouse breaks it's banks, and since Ouse Bridge crosses the river near it, it's an ideal place for a film crew to record it when flooded, so it regularly appears on local and national news bulletins when the water rises here.
The water here is almost at the top of the outdoor tables, and is therefore about 3 feet deep - something like 12 feet above normal river level.
The interior of this pub is designed to cope with floods - bare brick walls and stone flagged floors which can simply be hosed down when the floods recede. It's familiarity on TV makes it a magnet for tourists, and it's often very busy.
The sun was shining, and the flow of the river was beginning to slow, with the river height probably passed it's peak, so this pub should be open again in a couple of days.
Thank you Sarah. Since it floods several times a year they need to be prepared. Earlier in the year, as the water went down, they were serving again while the river was still lapping against the bases of the outdoor tables!
That's a beautiful photo and I love the look of the pub. I don't mean to sound ignorant, being from Texas I'm far from there, but on what tv show is the pub featured?
Thank you Caren - It's on local and sometimes national news bulletins when floods affect York, which is usually several times a year (I think this is the third flood this year). It's a good filler on a slow news day! We are fortunate that normally very few properties are affected now thanks to extensive flood defences being built in the 1980s.
Otherwise it would be rather grim inside after events like these!

Thank you Sue - I don't think they mind the floods too much, since they get a free TV advert!
I thought that you might recognise this one!
Thank you Brian. Although it's a lot of water, I have seen it much higher - almost to the top of the windows on one occasion!

I think it's popularity as the pub that floods that tourists have seen on TV probably makes it a very profitable business!
Thank you Kathy, glad you like it.
Thank you - it made it's latest appearance on local news this week.
Thank you Kylie, everything is back to normal - including the crowds of tourists here! - http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-22
