York City Walls

140 - Most of the city walls are open for visitors to walk along, but this short stretch, which runs from Exhibition Square and past the Multangular Tower in the Museum Gardens, and towards Lendal Bridge is not open - the only section not to have had the wall walks widened to allow access to the public.
Nice composition and colours!

The wall is amazing! It's so hard for me to wrap my head around something that ancient still standing. Wow! Great image...the colors and textures are so sharp.

I didn't recall York had a wall around it. I have a fascination for walled cities, but alas, none here in the USA.

Thank you Ruth - I particularly like the sky, since we haven't seen too much blue sky recently!

@suelaubscher

Thank you Sue, this piece of wall almost oozes history. Behind the medieval wall lies a section of Roman wall, which was excavated by archaeologists in the 1970s

@clmiller

Thank you Caren. This bit of wall is over 700 years old, but hidden from sight behind it is a section of Roman wall which is probably about 1700 years old!

@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob - yes, 2.5 miles long! There is also an earlier shorter Roman wall, most of which is now hidden below either the later wall or buildings.

Blue sky! With the lovely wall and trees, lovely composition, this could have been taken hundreds of years ago and still look the same.

@bruni

Thank you Bruni - this bit of the wall is in pretty good condition. There is a long term process to conserve the wall, and occasionally sections are closed while restoration is carried out - any loose stones are firmly reattached, weeds are cleared etc.
