Over the rooftops

153 - The city walls along Jewbury (see yesterday's shot), and the bank on which they are built, are higher than the parts of the wall that we have seen previously. You walk at rooftop height, with views through gaps in the trees.

York Minster towers over this part of the city and is an impressive sight from the walls here. The east end of the Minster is covered in scaffolding as a restoration programme takes place. The huge east window (which covers an area equivalent to that of a tennis court) is being completely re-leaded and repaired.

The rooftops in the foreground are an interesting mixture of old and new. This area had become quite run down, but was renewed by restoring some of the more interesting old buildings, and building new housing to replace the other old properties, but built in traditional materials.
Nice, I love rooftop shots.

Love the contrast of old and new. I'm glad the renovations were done with the traditional materials. That will make it so much better! Great rooftop shot!

The cathedral will soon be in hiding! Roofs in Europe are fantastic as far as I am concerned. Lots of character. Nice contrast.

@clmiller

Thank you Caren - most new building done in the city centre is now very sympathetic to the historical context, so the feel of the old city is maintained.

@marieooi

Thank you Marie - I agree, but the east end should look fabulous when the work is done. There is always work been done on some part of such a large building.
