171- In the commentary on my last shot of the city walls in York ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-08-20) I mentioned the transformation of that area of the city. There are a number of fascinating buildings that can be seen from that stretch of the walls, dating from the earliest years of the railways, through to the 20th century.
One of these is the former North Eastern Railway company offices, now the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa.
It's construction was completed in 1906 as the headquarters of the NER company, one of the most wealthy and powerful companies in Britain at the time, and it's splendour reflected this.
More recently, the decline in railway employment in the city made this building surplus to requirements, and it was sold off and redeveloped as York's first 5 star hotel.
The interior is splendid, with the important historical features retained, but with luxurious hotel facilities for the guests
Impressive building beautifully captured and excellently captioned. It must have been some task to convert an office building to a hotel. Great recycling.
I was fortunate enough to have a guided tour of the inside when it was the York Residents Festival shortly after the opening of the hotel - it's a pretty impressive conversion, and fortunately many of the famous features of the office interiors are still there.

Thank you Michele, glad you like it! The interior is an amazing mixture of old and new. Many of the main rooms are very traditional, while the bedrooms that I've seen are quite modern in style, but somehow the mixture seems to work.
