Over the rooftops by if1

Over the rooftops

183 - Standing on the wall walk near Victoria Bar (see yesterday's shot), there is a great view over the housetops to the Central Tower of York Minster, which is about half a mile away to the north-north-east.

The area inside the city walls near Victoria Bar consists of a significant number of streets of terrace houses which would have been built around the time that Victoria Bar was broken through the city walls - in the 1830-40s.

Immediately outside the walls between Victoria Bar and Micklegate Bar is a car park, and beyond that there were more streets of terraced houses, some of which have been replaced by apartments of various ages.

So the view from the walls of the immediate area isn't particularly exciting, but who can complain when you can lift your eyes and see the Minster over the rooftops!
I like the rooftops in the foreground. The minster is looking lovely. Well done on reaching the halfway point on your project, I'm really enjoying your pictures of York!

Bob
Great picture. It appears you used a telephoto lens, compacting the depth of field. Can't beat European roof tops as a subject for art. FAV

Love the jumble of chimney pots and gables and the majestic tower on the horizon. Great shot Ian

@louisefrance

Thank you Louise, glad you are enjoying the tour. It's amazing that I'm half way through my project. I wasn't sure I would manage the daily shot, but so far so good!

@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob, and thank you for the fav! Yes, I was using the zoom - in fact almost full zoom, although the view of the full Minster on a lower zoom is just as impressive

@bkbinthecity

Thank you Brian, there are several places around the walls where there is a good view of the Minster tower, but this is one of my favourites

I do like this view, Ian. It makes the Minster seem like a guardian over the little houses.

@janturnbull

Thank you Janet - it is a bit like a guardian. It's always fascinating to see how far away from the city you can still see this tower. For example, it's clearly visible from the Cleveland Way north of Sutton Bank, when conditions are clear.
