208 - The floods in the centre of York are receding, but areas outside the city are still flooded. One of the effects of building hard defences in the city is that consticting the flow increases the height of the flood.
To alleviate this problem, a huge area north of the city is deliberately flooded. This area has always been prone to flooding, but now there is a high flood bank along it's eastern side, and a slightly lower bank on it's western side close to the river, with sluice gates at the northern and southern ends to massively increase it's capacity. As water levels rise the sluices control the flow into and out of this area. The idea is to reduce the maximum height of the floods, and it is quite successful at doing this.
So where is the river? It's to the right of the flood bank, past the row of trees, so it barely appears at all!
The latest update on the floods is that water levels have dropped further. The level at 4pm today was 4.00 metres above normal, down from the peak of 5.07 metres, so that's good news.
That`s also our way to deal with to much river water. Give the river what`s of the river. We call that space / land : `` Uiterwaarden ``
Hope the trouble soon will be over.
Thank you Roslyn - we have had a lot of rain, but the main problem is that three rivers from the Yorkshire Dales join just north of York, and their combined flow can be enormous if it's rained in the Dales. We usually get floods about 2 days after heavy rain up there!
Hope the trouble soon will be over.
Thank you Jen, the water has gone down quite a lot now.
Thank you Louise - the water store here was part of the work done after the massive floods in 1982
Thank you Pyrrhula - the water is well down now, and I was able to walk on a short part of the riverside path today.
Thank you - I was only walking on that flood bank less than a week ago!
Thank you Michel, glad you like it!
Thank you Kristin, and thank you for the fav!
Thank you Brian - thankfully the flood has almost gone now

Thank you Bob - the water has now gone down a lot!
Thank you Netkonnexion - the northern bypass road made a great vantage point for this shot!
Thank you Marie - it did rain quite a bit. There are three rivers that combine north of York, so the rain from the hills comes down these rivers too!
Thank you Tanja - when I left York yesterday morning it had fallen quite a lot.
Thank you Lynne - fortunately the water had gone down a lot when I left York.
Thank you Anna - glad you like it!
