228 - My shot of the Bile Beans advert from a couple of days ago set me wondering what other old adverts survive around York, so I went for a walk today to see what I could find.
Here we have the attractive Victorian Woods Mill, a riverside building that not only has a renovated advertisement, but also a crane from it's former use as a mill.
York's riverside was once very busy with commercial traffic, but this has now disappeared. The last cargo that I can remember was the delivery of reels of newsprint to the York Press printers building, but they have since moved to a new location away from the rivers.
Woods mill has now been converted for use as holiday apartments. Sadly it was one of the buildings affected by the recent flooding. The water reached the height of the bottom of the lower set of windows. The river is still a little high, but is now contained within it's normal banks.
This is a great looking building; sad that the industry has gone, but at least by converting to residential these buildings are saved from demolition (though not flooding!)
Remember those building in use in the 1950 when I was sailing on English coast and villages . Great that they are restored and being useful again . A beautiful capture
A beautiful capture of a a grand building. It is good that it is being used for an ongoing purpose. Looked up the Wiki to find the meaning of "Staith" - not a word I've see before.
Great shot! As I was reading your description, but before I came to the last paragraph, I was thinking what an awesome residential conversion project that would be.
Thank you Ladyjane, it is great that this attractive building has survived and is in use. It's an ideal site for holiday apartments, since it's a great riverside site and only a few minutes walk to many of the city's tourist attractions.
Thank you Helen - they've made a nice job of the conversion!
Thank you Caren - I love it that they've left the old name and the crane!
Thank you Jen, glad you like it!
Thank you Pyrrhula - interesting to know you were a sailor - you probably know our coast better than I do!
Thank you Tony - staith is a bit of our Viking heritage!
Thank you Bob - it does help to keep the historical character of the riverside!
Thank you Junan - the conversion does protect an attractive building.
Thank you Brian - I presume that internal work was done during the conversion to make it flood resistant
Thank you Liviv - I agree, it is an attractive building.
Thank you Roslyn - I'm not sure when the conversion was done, but it was only a few years ago, and it does look good.
Thank you Nat - it's a lovely riverside spot.
Thank you Marie - still quite a few old buildings to get shots of, but I chose this for the text about the old warehouse.
Nice shot

Thank you Petaqui, I should imagine it's a great place to stay, unless you happen to be on the lowest floor and the river is up!
