328 - The chapter house is a part of York Minster that I rarely visit. I really should call in more often, because it does have some nice stained glass and a spectacular ceiling.
The octagonal Chapter House was built between 1260 and 1280. It is 63 feet across and about the same height to the top of the dome which is a remarkable construction, since it is without a central pillar supporting the domed roof.
In the Chapter House the Dean and Chapter would meet to discuss the affairs and administration of the Minster - it would be hard to think of a more attractive setting to hold meetings!
No, I haven't read Pillars of the Earth, or indeed any other works by Ken Follett, but I have witnessed some of the impressive work done by today's craftsmen maintaining the Minster, and I can't help but be impressed by the work of the stonemasons, glaziers and many others!
Thank you Heather - I took quite a few shots of the ceilings in different parts of the Minster, and they are all quite stunning, but I think I agree that this is the nicest.
