Doonie boys by ingrid2101

Doonie boys

Finished a roll of film and got it developed - exactly one month after I took this photo! These are the "doonie" men coming from the harbour to meet the start of the ba. Street football game that has been going on for centuries. All the shops and houses have specially made barriers to prevent any damage as a 200 strong scrum is quite scary at times.

I'm so pleased these turned out as I.ve been out with about 6 different cameras today and this was the only one I finished film in. Took a few polaroids too which can be used as filler

Camera Rolleimat F
Film Kodak GC 400 asa
Nice bit of history. Do women play?
Do you develop your own films?

I love the colors you have here. They look like they are out for some fun. I cant wait to see more from you=)

@gwhit123 I only develop b&w but am tempted to try colour as I've seen some recently on here and it's just temp critical. Not as complicated as I first thought. Women played in 1945/46 however they were deemed to be too violent!

@aprilmilani Thanks April, it was hard after I scanned it not to touch it in ps. Quite liberating

Great unfolding of tradition and story. The film and picture reflects it perfectly!

@ingrid2101 haha love that. I can fully appreciate that about scottish women, being married to one!

Nice one Ingrid. I have only ever developed B&W film but I have created prints from slides and colour negatives - also very temperature intolerant so I have a large thermostatically controlled bath in my darkroom. Worth the investment at the time but unused for a number of years now...

@annethomson Thank you Anne !
@gwhit123 Ha ha George!
@steampowered NOT developed by me Paul! Local chemist - I haven't done any colour but am very tempted to try, I understand it's no more complicated than b&w just very temperature sensitive. Get your darkroom back in use!!

This is great... lovev the determination in the guys' walk, nice job. I've developed colour film, (a LONG time ago mind, and I had use of a great set up, but it wasn't that hard).
February 1st, 2013
Wonderful capture! I like the determination in their walk, the setting, the reflections in the window.

Come on the Doonies! Great photo, really timeless. We have a woman's ba in the collection at work.

Love looking at different places and especially when capturing moments like this. :)
February 1st, 2013
Love the story of that picture and love the photo too!
February 1st, 2013
Nice photo. I think it must be the colours of the film, but they seem to give the image a slightly dated feeling of the 1970's or 80s. I like this.
February 1st, 2013
Awesome you are doing film.. this is a great shot too.. love the postures of these men.. well captured!!

Nice shot. Some of those looklike they have trouble on their minds :-) Agree about the dated look, I guess we're just not use to looking at film anymore

Great shot. Definitely determined...

@whdphotog check ou "bounce the movie" if you google that and click on our travels at the bottom is a trailer of the ba - and it's one of the best I've seen with a bit of history

@sheilag Oh I'd really like to see that sometime Sheila, give us a shout when the museum reopens please - is it in the public section?

Thank you for your comments, I love the colours of film and I love the excitement of collecting prints, haven't done my own C41 processing yet - just b&w however I am very tempted

@spankyjane Thanks Mel - didn't recognize your profile pic - looks really cool. Glad to hear it's not too hard that seems to be what everyone says

I have been in that street a few times , on the day trip over from John O'Groats. Last time I was there a pickup truck turned up with a man tied in the back. He was covered in blood and feathers and stuff, apparently it was some sort of Stag ceremony. Your picture brings back happy memories of visiting your lovely islands.
February 2nd, 2013
@markp Ha ha , glad it's bringing back memories - you obviously witnessed a blackening! It does keep visitors wondering - no blood though, it's usually molasses- the stickier the better :)
February 2nd, 2013
@ingrid2101 its on permanent display in the Ba case alongside the collection of mens and boys Bas. It's not that different.
February 2nd, 2013
Fav. fantastic. i have read about this game
February 2nd, 2013
Great catch of the attitude they have! I can almost hear them coming closer and closer!
February 2nd, 2013
Nice colour.
February 2nd, 2013
Love this story, Ingrid. And you've almost tempted me to get my film camera out again.
February 2nd, 2013
Great bookend to your first picture. They look like they mean business :)
February 2nd, 2013
@Cheesebiscuit Go for it! Remember that feeling when you get your pack of photos and can't wait to look through them.

@chewyteeth
Small world - does this camera ring any bells? part of my christmas present from my husband - it's fantastic by the way - I love it

@ingrid2101

what makes you say that? is it a rangefinder? I used to have a Rollei rangefinder, strange how you seem to know that!
February 3rd, 2013
Is this the same event you described in photo 1? If so, excitement and more great shots lie ahead. Very cool that this is a film shot.
February 3rd, 2013
@chewyteeth This is your old camera!! I was reading an older HDR post as my husband had asked me something about it. I was reading out some of the funnier comments and said "cheewyteeth". Stuart looked at me, and got busy on the laptop asking does he have a rollei ? Turns out he'd bought it from you on eBay. It's cool as, a great camera! I'm never good at explaining typing so hope that makes sense :)
February 3rd, 2013
Love this Ingrid! The colours and how candid it is! And how spooky is it that you got Dave's cam? amazing you guys! @chewyteeth
February 3rd, 2013
@frida thanks Frida! It was so bizarre! I couldn't believe it- then my husband showed me his listing!
February 3rd, 2013
@ingrid2101

Wtf. I hate you then I bought that for 27 and sold it for about 15 doh, that is strange. It's got a beautiful wind on and release action. Did you replace the light seals?
February 3rd, 2013
@chewyteeth He did day he'd got a bargain! So hate him. He did replace the light seals. It's a gorgeous solid camera. It has got lovely winding! No you can't get it back :)
February 3rd, 2013
@ingrid2101
I hope he left good feedback! :)
February 3rd, 2013
@chewyteeth he did! You'd also emailed him an instruction manual so he was very happy!
February 3rd, 2013
that's pretty mad. I was sad to see that camera go but I have a system whereby I try to pay for everything I buy with sales, so my camera collection is neutral if that makes sense, so if I want a Canon AE I'll buy it as part of a joblot and I'll refurbish the other stuff and sell it until its paid for the AE too. But the Rollei I made a loss on, still it freed up some cash which went towards - I think - my Contax 137 which is a superb SLR
February 3rd, 2013
@chewyteeth I know what you mean - it's a pricey hobby when you still use film . I started making notebooks to sell to pay for my film and camera addiction and they do really well and it keeps me in film and cameras
February 3rd, 2013
very cool!
February 3rd, 2013
@jsw0109 thanks Jeff!
