time to say goodbye by jackies365

time to say goodbye

my wedding dress...30 years old...definitely 80's! when they say yes to the dress I know what they mean. I saw my dress in a wedding magazine and fell in love. Probably wouldn't pick it now but back then I though it was beautiful. When I pulled it out I saw what I saw then. The lace was beautiful and it fit me like a glove, my waist was much smaller then. I will keep a small piece of lace from the hem to tuck into my daughter's wedding gown somewhere but the rest of the dress will now be donated to a local group that makes Angel Gowns for infants who have passed away. Two of my friends sew for this group, their gowns are beautiful and all gowns including prom dresses are accepted. The outer gown is usually the wedding dress fabric but they often put a colored lining in the gown and embellish it with beads or ribbons. The need is much greater than one would think. My girlfriend told me they recently donated 250 gowns to a local hospital. I am in awe of those numbers and of those who take their time to do this for those families who are grieving terribly for a lost child. bless them all!
What a story and what a great cause. I heard a while ago about an organization that's called NILMDTS - Now I lie me down to sleep. It's a group of photographers, that go to hospitals and join parents who have to say good bye to their newborn babies. It's so sad, but I think it is wonderful that there people out there, who care and help to keep memories.
Thanks for sharing the beautiful story and picture. (Sorry, I hope I explained it so you understand what I'm talking about - English is not my first language...)

@californialover I understood all of it! I too have heard about the photographers who do that. I looked into doing it but felt I didn't have the skills at the time to do it. Now that I am improving I may look into it again. I worked in the funeral business for several years and even though these are terribly sad times for families I can do this type of work. Thanks for your kind words.

Nice capture! I definitely recognize the style, my dress is from the 80's too. Donating your dress for gowns is an absolutely beautiful way to bless the families who have lost their sweet babies.

This dress is beautiful! I can see why you picked. I also think it is so charitable of you to donate it to such a beautiful cause. You are as beautiful as the dress is as well as so very very kind.

What a great shot and story. Your dress is similar to what I wore in the '80s, also. What a great organization to sew angel dresses. What is the name of the group that accepts the donated wedding dresses as I will gladly send them mine. I have a daughter with autism who will unfortunately never have the opportunity to wear mine someday.

@boatpainter I looked at the national page for Angel Gowns to see if there was one near you but they said they weren't accepting any gowns til September. I don't think our group turns down any. If you can't find a group in your area, I will get you the address to ship it to here if you would like. My friend who does this is going to work on mine so she told me she would bring them to church so I could see them finished. I hope to photograph them. How old is your daughter? My daughter is an OT and has quickly become specialized in working with children with Autism. She is presenting at a seminar through U of M on Friday. She is speaking about the sensory system in children with autism.

@jackies365 Wow, that is great about your daughter. What a wonderful person she must be to specialize in children with autism. My daughter is 16 and had many years of OT as her sensory system is quite affected. I will look up the page to see if I can send them my gown in the fall. Thanks so much for letting me know about this! :-)
