I had to rip apart the dashboard and clean the electrical contacts on my 1995 Chevy Caprice. This is a detail view of the speedometer/odometer display unit. The dashboard gets dust inside it and when it is cold the display doesn't show my speed. After it warms up then the display usually comes on.
