Flattery or plagiarism? by jgoldrup

Flattery or plagiarism?

I don’t think it is physically possible to commit photographic plagiarism if you have held up a camera and pressed the shutter. However, I do think it is nice to credit those who have inspired you. If you don’t recall who or what inspired you a simple "Hey, this wasn’t an original idea" wouldn’t hurt to keep you honest. For this reverse macro shot, these are the photos that inspired me:

http://365project.org/shutterbugger/365/2011-04-24 (a fantastic reverse macro photo with instructions in the comments)
http://365project.org/grammardog/365/2011-01-15 (a reverse macro photo starring a book)
http://365project.org/vikdaddy/365/2010-05-26 (a photo starring a dictionary)

I increased the brightness and contrast of the shot as the experimental exp comp and ISO used was off.
This is a bit philosophical in the sense in which we define originality. How original are our ideas really? But I see your point. You've demonstrated it wonderfully with a beautiful shot.

Great job. Thanks for giving credit to those who inspired you so we can all become inspired as a result. Hope that sentence made sense. I'm still a little out of it with this darn cold.

Great shot and thanks for the nod...but it wasn't necessary! I had been reading about this not long before Dale @onarom posted his own and inspired me... check out his latest http://365project.org/onarom/365/2011-04-26

I like this shot and your caption is interesting. I also agree with giving credit. Sometimes I think it's obvious that an idea for a picture I've taken isn't original (i posted a picture of clouds today, which I'm certain is not original, lol) and therefore needs no mention. But i know what you mean, if i see a picture and think "hey, cool i want to recreate/try something like that", then a mention is nice. sorry for that longwinded ramble. this really is a great shot (the focus and idea)

Oh I know exactly which one of grammardog's photos helped inspire this one! It inspired me to do one too:) Yours is great! Perfect focus!
I don't think grammardog's posting anymore, haven't seen anything from her for a long while:(

Great idea for a shot and nice links to the other 365ers too :)

Excellent focus. I think all the shots I have taken, have already been done, but I'm not copying anyone. If I try something I have seen on here, I would give credit. There are so many stunning photographers, it's easy to be inspired and want to try what they have done.

Wonderful job! I never thought of doing reverse macro on text. I might plagiarize this in the near future :)

Jenn- Thanks for the shout-out! @shutterbugger

@idonotsqueak ~ And I see your point as well...does anyone really have an original thought/idea...or even free choice, for that matter? But I'm not much of a philosopher. ;)

@shutterbugger ~ It totally was.

@pwallis ~ I know, it's too bad. When I grabbed her link, I saw that she hasn't posted at all in April.
