Diaz writes with a unique mode of expression and vernacular that is streetwise, aggressive and yet, interestingly erotic! His prose is similar to a “stream of consciousness” which, at times makes it hard to follow. The turnabout to that is, that’s what makes it distinctive, scrappy, and magnetic; you want to go back for more!
The author’s Dominican heritage makes for a unique backstory to his main character Yunior, the immigration of his family to the United States, the struggles that they encounter, and the “heritage of the Dominican male” that he cannot elude. He undermines every opportunity for happiness in love, and life, and doesn’t seem to know how to break the cycle.
An truly interesting read that I would never have chosen if not for my CVLCC Book Club! Thank you!
