Foraging in the garden

I spotted this fellow from the kitchen window, grabbed my camera and 'snapped' him through the window.
What manner of beastie is this? I'm a North American birder, so I am unfamiliar with this one...something woodpeckery?

Hi Tim, this is a Green Woodpecker (picus viridis) fairly common (about 52000 breeding pairs in UK) - How do they know that??

What a beauty.

@jon_lip Thanks! They probably derive that information on breeding pairs by examining random samplings of motel registrations and extrapolating.
