The Duke of Wellington Monument by jon_lip

The Duke of Wellington Monument

We were lucky enough to have the loan of a house for a few days in Somerset. We took a drive up to see this obelisk. It is a triangular shape to reflect the shape of the bayonets used at the battle of Waterloo by the English soldiers rather than the usual slim blade.

The Wellington Monument is a 175-feet-high triangular obelisk located on a point of the Blackdown Hills, approx. 1.5 miles south of Wellington in Somerset. It is a grade II* listed building and is the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world!

Unfortunately, the Duke died before it was finished because the cash that was raised to build it ran out!
It looks big!
