Spend a dollar- today's prompt. This bill was one of my 1st earnings from photography. I hadn't ever really set out to make money with my art, just share it. I had displayed 5 palladium prints at a show in Wisconsin and when I went to collect them after the show ended, one was missing. I found out that one of the curators had fancied the print and was willing to buy it from me. I reluctantly sold it. I have sense chosen not to sell my work, I do give it away upon request. To me, the selling takes away from my creativity.
This particular Silver Certificate isn't worth anymore than $1.00, maybe $3.00. It is not available to be redeemable in silver metal since June of 1968. I will just hold on to it.
Personally, I don’t think the selling takes away from the creativity. It’s when you begin to start altering your photography to produce what you think will sell, rather than what you are inspired to photograph, that the creativity, and the joy, suffers. I do agree, however, that any sales can be the thin edge of the wedge that turns your mind to considering what is saleable, even if only subconsciously. It’s a slippery slope.
Fascinating linguistic history. Thanks for sharing. We've only had dollars since 1966, we had pounds, shillings and pence till then. I do have a real silver dollar though. Dated 1898.
I've had a couple of offers on Flickr (where I also post my work) to join in selling my photos but I feel it would spoil my own enjoyment.
Luckily I have enough to buy bread etc etc!
