Underground Gardens

Had a lovely visit and tour today through the Forestiere Underground Gardens located in Fresno, CA. To make a long story short, the gardens were created by a young man from Sicily, Baldassare Forestiere. He started this project in 1905 and worked on it for 40 years. His dream was to create a Mediterranean resort with his 80 acres underground and have grape vines and citrus trees. The San Joaquin valley can be scorching hot in the summer with temperatures reaching 115 degrees so he wanted the resort to be in the cool underground. Sadly, much of his work was demolished after his death by the development of highway 99 and Carl's Junior. Some of his rooms were in the path of technology. All that remains are 2 1/2 acres of finished work.
Interesting architecture and background. Cool capture.

Talk about lack of foresight on the part of developers! This would've been a stunning resort and such a pity his art was destroyed when it might have been enjoyed by so many! Who has said, I can't wait to get to Fresno to go to Carl's Jr's?
