What a great mug! It's a good first try but I guess rope lights aren't the best for bokeh. Can you go lower on the aperture? Also moving the lights back a bit more might help. Keep trying!

@jannaellen It was rather a Heath Robinson affair. I used my zoom lens as that normally gives a shallow DOF but I can only get the aperture down to f5.4. I think proper little bulbs may have worked - I gave up when the cat started leaoing on the lights!!

cute shot...and I'm glad I'm not the only person having issues with that bokeh business....for every halfway decent one there's a gazillion ones in the trash.
