I couldn't resist this sign outside King's when we're all traumatised by the impending loss of an independent Picnik! The Victorian Penfold (hexagonal) postbox is a particular favourite of postbox aficionados and I had a rather long conversation about it with the University Messenger last year. I'm delighted to notice in this photo that King's has a doorbell...
Huge thanks for putting Rafiki on PP (she's very proud and asked me to tell you that she is a lady cat). Apologies for slow commenting this weekend - it's been rather a busy one. Lots of cold wind and rain but when the sun breaks through it's definitely warm - hurrah!!
Apparently they are more against bicycles, dogs, radios, and picnics than they are against smoking. The smoking just gets a tiny symbol on the sign. Great, interesting photo.
Really nice pic, Judith. I love the pop of red coming from the very fine post box. However, I don't like the sign... there are too many NOs in this world!
Two of my favourites in on shot - Royal Mail red pillar box and Picnik ... and today I saw a message from Google saying they are not killing Picnik but rebranding it as a downloadable application, and that's the best news I could have hoped to hear!
I got a shot recently of a very similar post box to this under Tower Bridge but the slot is in a different place - http://365project.org/darrenburch/365/2012-01-06 - they're a beautiful design.
Fantastic composition, color, interest.
I'm bothered by the impending loss of Picnik, as I was JUST going to do the ace membership (and had a while back considered paying for Picnik) when I realized what was happening. Now, other than extra album space, I can't see that the ace membership is so beneficial?? Please someone correct me if I am wrong....
@fueast Better late than never! I tried some of the Befunky frames but I haven't tried processing - I'll give it another look. What about Picasa - have you tried that? It looked a bit complicated getting started so I didn't bother before... BTW Monty has been through King's - Nigel's dad marched him through once oblivious to the signs - the porters were very polite to him as they pointed out his crime!!
@mainebrighteyes Well the stats are fun and you do get told who's faved your photos - it's also a good way of supporting the site which is expensive to run.
@fueast@jgpittenger I have HDR on my camera, yet am not really sure how to use it. It takes 5 shots and I wasn't sure how to go about processing them. Thanks for the info, I've used befunky before, but not photamatix., I'll check it out!
Great shot Judith. Love the red of the postbox and the texture in the wall behind it. I love the signs around the UK - some must have some interesting stories behind them.
great shot Judith...I've photographed this box a few times - the scene has more significance currently tho! I'm way behind commenting and viewing and everything! 3 days of uploading and processing. Time for a cuppa I think!!
Nice use of reds here Judith...i think you have done pillar boxes before on your 365.....a lovely little composition.........btw I have a friend who was a postie........he corrected me when i'd done a red post box picture ......"pillar box phil" !!!
Can't believe how far I have to scroll down here to leave a comment Judith !! Not surprising really as it is a cracker !!! Love that red post box & the sign is very topical re the Picnic shock, such a lot to look at in a picture !! I did make Rafiki a girl but changed her sex when saw every one else had said 'he' sorry Rafiki ! So slow this w/e with photos & comments & too much good TV tonight to be sitting in front of a computer !!! Birdsong is one of my favourite books so was very keen to watch it tonight. The midwife one is good to with Miranda Hart so I am catching up now !!
@happypat That's been our viewing for the night! The boys joined us this week as Miranda was on - last week it was just the female household with the midwives - I'm enjoying it apart from the poor girl! I loved Birdsong too - the whole book is quite stressful if I remember rightly what with all that illicit canoodling and the going over the top scene is the most tense I've ever been reading a book!! They are doing it well although Nigel keeps doing the 'looking not speaking' thing which is a bit scary!!
Rules Rules everywhere there are rules! Ugh! I like the neat post box! There is so much to see in this photo....very interesting composition...the lock....the ice!
@judithg I must admit I thought he was a bit spooky & has, dare I say it a sort of ghost face !!! I think I will have to re-read as it's a long time since I read it ! I was surprised when he ''died'' so early on so was glad when it all got back on track !! I think Miranda Hart is going to be brilliant !
@happypat That's exactly what I was thinking - oh what about the 'over the top' and the brothel and the after the war parts but then I started to wonder if I'd mixed up books (and I'm still not sure about those bits!)!! It did start to dawn that maybe he'd been left for dead but in the book he describes it from his own perspective so it probably seemed different - I wasn't surprised when he came too - it's just a wonder they didn't all die from septicaemia! Miranda is brilliant - I love how posh she is but the ladies all love her because she isn't patronising.
I love those postboxes and what a great tribute to our beloved Picnik. I really don't know what I will do without it - I'm so addicted... Nearly all your shots could be postcards, Judith. You should get in contact with the tourist office ;)!
Cool pop of red with that letterbox!
(Oh, nice pic by the way, Judith!)

Just love teh sign and your comment. The pillarbox too of course
I'm muttering GIMP to all you Picnik aficionados
