St Benet's by judithg

St Benet's

Well what can I say about yesterday's photo? Huge thanks for the amazing response!! It's made my week!
This is another shot from yesterday - today was full of drippy plants and I thought this was more cheery. St Benet's is the oldest building in Cambridge - the tower dates from between 1000-1050 AD. It is the church for an Anglican Franciscan monastery which is tucked away behind and has a beautiful enclosed courtyard/garden that you can occasionally catch a glimpse of if a monk is going in or out. It has a pretty arched iron gateway and I had to chose between the clematis climbing over that with the church tower behind or this shot and this one just edged it.
You captured the clematis beautifully and the shot is both interesting and attractive. That pink is fabulous!

What a collection. I like the way the clematis is clinging to the church notice! Beautiful pink

Nice. Reminds me of one of those Victorian scrapbooks with floral decoration on the pages.

Gorgeous flowers, love the bright colours.

This is lovely Judith, a beautiful clematis & a very welcoming sign to any one new in Cambridge. I like the sound of the monks too... that would be perfect to lie in wait for a monk !!!!!

@happypat I have been known Pat but ended up engaged in conversation with one of the homeless chaps who sits outside the monastery gates and missed the shot!!

@judithg Ah yes I remember !!!

@wordpixman @judithg I agree with Arthur about the Victorian feel of this photo. Beautifully composed and focused.

Oh I've got one of those - or at least used to have. Might have to pop out to see if its flowered.

You have an artist's eye for the unusual!

The pink is wonderful. I like the open flowers, but it's the closed one next to them that really catches my eye. :)

Beautiful clematis. It makes me think I should check whether mine is flowering yet although it's probably been washed away with all the rain we've had. I'd love for you to get a shot of a monk :o) xx

@judithg I will definitely be coming at some point because I can't cope without @phoenixrising in my life, so I will let you know when I do and we can meet in real life!
May 3rd, 2012
@wrighty Hurrah!! @phoenixrising and I keep passing each other unknowingly - one day I'll be barging her out of the way to take the same photo so it's time we had a controlled meet!!

Hi Judith, I started a thread about the camera settings challenge. We are going to start a challenge for people who want to learn how to use the various functions of the camera (M). The winner will select an experienced photographer they like to come up with the next camera challenge. I am wondering if you would consider hosting the first Camera Settings Challenge? I am going to type up something that would always get copied on each challenge. But the host is going to come up with one particular challenge and add links to "helps" for that particular challenge as well. Please read the challenge thread under Challenges. Would you consider being the first one to give us a camera setting challenge?

@myhrhelper Well that's very flattering Kathy! Thank you! I feel very under qualified but I'll give it a go. I don't often use fully manual but I do use Aperture or shutter speed priority sometimes. I'll look for some links to helpful sites.

Thank you! Please select one camera setting to challenge us with.
Do you think you would be able to use the challenge description I posted in the thread or should I send it to you via e-mail since this is the first initial CSC challenge? My e-mail is Kathy@myHRhelper.com and I would be happy to send you it. Would you be able to kick it off tomorrow?

Those flowers are so gorgeous. I remember how they kept growing into the baskets of the bikes which were chained to the fence :).
