Beneath the surface

Antony Gormley's work 'Earthbound: Plant' has been installed at the entrance to the Downing Site which is a hotchpotch of University Departments, including the one where I did my PhD (along with @helenmoss who was in a different Department which shared our odd little building). The soles of these feet are attached to a 6'4" cast iron figure, made by casting Gormley himself, which is buried head first in the ground. It's on long term loan from the Royal Academy to the MacDonald Institute for Archaeological Research which seems like the perfect place to have it - it makes me want to excavate and find out what's beneath the surface.
Very good and thought-provoking!

Long term loan & I should think it is if they have buried it in the floor!!! What an amazing idea, he has a very edgy style & perhaps no conceit if he buries his work where no one can see it!! So interesting Judith!!! I think perhaps something knowledgeable to discuss if you want to impress! LOL !

This is so unusual, it is a shame a bit that the work is hidden.

wow it looks cool, and such an interesting idea! I'll have to look out for it next time I'm round there.

Cool installation, how do we know it's not just soles of feet? :P

Just thought he is the 'Angel of the North' guy isn't he?

As has been said, it is thought-provoking, and makes me wonder how many people walk over it without realising what is underneath. As it is, the soles are rather beautiful!

This is very intriguing, Judith - I'll have to google Gormley to find out more!
June 30th, 2012
interesting!

@johnnyfrs I tried to find some pictures of it being buried but I can't - so we don't know!
June 30th, 2012
@happypat That's him - you can bring it up in after dinner conversation now!
June 30th, 2012
@cookie123 Yes that's how I felt - and I also wonder whether he's surrounded by soil or did he come in concrete?
June 30th, 2012
Yay - another Downing Site alumnus! Where were you - I was/am still Plant Sciences - can't believe I practically walked over this thing for years until I found out what it was for my shot of it a month or so ago!

@katharinehubbard I thought that but I think it's fairly new? I was in Biochemistry in the Sir William Hardy Building and then I was in Pathology but based at Addenbrooke's and then in Biotech across the road and then industry - I've been around!

How do we know that? I need proof. Get digging
June 30th, 2012
Very strange! cool shot though =)
June 30th, 2012
@fueast I'm just off with my trowel....
June 30th, 2012
Fascinating project - sort of extreme ostriching.
June 30th, 2012
@ellida LOL!
June 30th, 2012
@johnnyfrs Exactly - I find this bizarre...............
June 30th, 2012
p.s. They are stylish feet though & make a good pic!
June 30th, 2012
Love the pic, but I'll be honest - I really don't 'get' most of Gormley's work. I thought the 'suicide' statues were distasteful at best. Anyway - nice shot! :)
June 30th, 2012
Glad I am not the only one who questioned the underground existence!
June 30th, 2012
Now that is weird! Great detail on the feet though
June 30th, 2012
Very cool shot.. I like this a lot!
June 30th, 2012
I like this shot. Interesting "street art".
June 30th, 2012
I agree - I find this a bizarre concept. Artists are a funny lot!
June 30th, 2012
Can't believe you would go to all this trouble to simply display the soles of your feet. Certainly has an Archaeological link. Thanks for sharing.

Really interesting and intriguing shot xx

Very interesting shot - and I share your feelings. Would be nice to know what is underneath!

Fabulous, wow, kinda gives me the creeps just a tad knowing something is buried even though it is only a statue.
July 4th, 2012
ooh I didn't know about this - I must go and seee it - definitely remember a good few days during my PhD years when I would have happily buried myself headfirst in concrete!
