Another shot from my Saturday 'tourist stroll'. This is Dr Stephen Perse who can be found in 'Tree Court' at Gonville and Caius College. Stephen Perse made £10,000 profit from loans to businesses and left a considerable amount of his money to establish a Free Grammar School to educate 100 scholars, almshouses for 6 poor widows and numerous other philanthropic donations. The Perse School is now the oldest in Cambridge, being 400 years old in 2015. Although, sadly, it is no longer free, it does have a considerable number of bursaries available to provide free or subsidised places. Adam is in the very lucky position of going to the school and, as I've mentioned before, is a keen hockey player so we will all be watching with anticipation when his teacher, Glenn Kirkham, leads out the hockey players as Captain of the GB Team tonight. A lot of boys and girls at the school will be very proud - they had an assembly when Adam first started and were asked to say who they aspired to be when they were older. One older boy raised his hand and said, 'Glenn Kirkham' and then blushed furiously! But it must be great as a teacher to hear that. So there's my Olympic-themed shot for the day!
Sorry I'm behind and was absent - I've been feeling rather 'off' - dizzy and tired since the last physio appointment - the consultant I happened to see today says it could well be the exercises affecting my neck so I haven't been carrying a camera around too much and have been chilling out.
I really liked Gonville and Caius - I think it was the first college you showed me :). The news about your neck and shoulder don't sound so good though - hope you chill enough to feel well again soon!
Oh lots of information here & I did just hear before the GB hockey team were one up so you will really be routing for them!!! Lucky Adam he has done well & perhaps we might see him in the Olympic team someday!!! ?? Lovely photo by the way!
Hope your neck & shoulder is improving , we haven' t heard you mention it lately so thought the treatment was working. Sounds like you still have lots of problems...... it must be very wearing for you.
@happypat Haha - he's a bit off that - Glenn Kirkham played county football, squash, hockey, cricket and athletics and was already playing Hockey for England at U18 level. There is a boy at our rival school playing England U16 and he's amazing - not just physically but mentally as well.
The shoulder is making slow progress and is nothing like it was before 'the torture' - it's just been a bit odd this week. New physio - he's good - he does subtle things that have a big impact but all the loosening up in one area knocks on to the next!
is that a wisteria climbing the wall Judith, it's a mighty impressive wisteria to match the impressive statue :) ...hope the aches and dizziness disappear soon
Must be interesting to have a celebrated teacher, but not suffer from the narcissistic vanity of ecclesiastes. Pity it is not free, but that is what has become of public education, it is for the privately funded.
Lovely arches and light/shadows. Sorry to hear re your neck and feeling off. Hope for a quick recovery. I'm back to driving my husband's car...my knee isn't yet ready for the clutch. Bummer
nice shot! Interesting info about the hockey too - will tell Jazz (she got through to JDC for next year so v keen on it again!) Hope your nexk gets better soon.
@fueast Oh really - at Perse Girls or Perse Boys which now takes girls as well? It's very confusing - the kids refer to 'Perse girls' and 'Perse Boys girls'!
@happypat Oh yeah!!!!! I'm a bit confused as to why Barry Muddleton had the captain's armband as Glenn is definitely captain according to the BBC. Maybe he's 'squad captain'!

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
