Bought by Charles Darwin's son, George, in 1885 along with the adjacent elegant house, 'Newnham Grange' (to the left along the river a little bit) The Old Granary is now part of Darwin College. I seem to remember that Charles Darwin's niece, Gwen Raverat, writes about it in her book 'Period Piece: A Cambridge Childhood' but I can't remember what she says! Anyway I've taken its photo innumerable times so I thought I'd post it. The river comes through sluice gates here and with all the rain over the summer and winter is has mostly been a swirling brown but has changed to a lovely green.
Three good things:
1. Another lovely day giving the flora and fauna a real respite even if it isn't exactly warm.
2. Mr and Mrs Blackcap on my feeders.
3. Cracked on with my outsourcing work - another couple of hours and I can get paid and resign!
Charles was of course born in Shrewsbury. Lovely shot of a great building. We also have a Mr and Mrs Blackcap each winter that hang out with the sparrows. They were still here a couple of days ago - which is late.
Aha - we got punts from the granta for my friend's hen-do some years back - have hazy recollection of five of us from one punt (four of us having fallen in and the bride having given up and jumped) swim-wading the thing past this building!
