Baked Off

This wasn't the idea for my shot tonight - that was supposed to be a beautiful baked apple like the one on the front of this month's Waitrose magazine. It has a custard filling and a pretty pastry hat with leaves on it. Well mine looked like that before I cooked them but then they exploded in the oven. In fact really that's what you'd expect so I'm thinking the magazine version may have been a cheat. On top of that Adam texted me today to say it is his 'cake day' for tutor group tomorrow and did I fancy making the cake for him as he was 'at school and wotnot'? Well I would have told him it's time he learned but he's full of cold and I didn't think his tutor group would be mad keen on his baking. Anyway I managed to do the base AND caramel wrong for Millionaire's Shortbread - don't know what's wrong with me - and ended up going to Tesco for ready made caramel and then remaking the base etc. Looks pretty good now but I've had so many calories I daren't eat my exploded baked apple.
You will be on bake off next year!!!! lol
Nice shot :)

You sound like me in a kitchen. I can still make everything come out wrong. I like the shot - great focus

Ha! cool shot... you could have shown us exploded baked apple... sounds interesting! I am wondering if it was all over the inside of your oven... hope not!

Oh so funny Judith........apply for Bake Off next year ....you would never have a soggy bottom! Millionaires Shortbread is notoriously hard to make...that toffee is the very devil! Exploding apples...that would make Paul's eyebrows rise!

Close enough, and sounds tasty

@happypat and you should see it now - I timed it wrong and tried cutting it when the caramel was soft (the tinned stuff always is too soft) and the chocolate had set hard. I will tell Adam that he has to say he made it!

@judithg I have made it in the last but have never yet got the toffee right, it squeezes out as you cut the hard chocolate...I have a friend who's an expert...her party piece!

@happypat I need her top tips! The home made caramel was firmer but a bit grainy!

Oh dear, it sounds like you've had fun. Did you watch the bake-off with the pastry wrapped pears? I could just imagine mine all slipping off because the pears were too hot. I see you've got some posh 00 grade flour there!

cool idea for a shot

Well at least you got a fun shot. Sorry for your frustrating day!

Oh dear! I made some apple muffins (excuse was to use some of the fallen apples, but really just to satisfy my greed), and they sank in the middle - but they do taste nice!

Even bad millionaire's shortbread is good. And you are a very dedicated and diligent mother even if the end result isnt what it might be - I hope adam is suitably appreciative!
