Umbellate and moth

I took Monty out to Newnham and found the free car park choca - a bit surprising as the schools have gone back though it was a sunny day and kids were in the paddling pool. It was looking remarkably blue and clean - probably because it's been in the newspaper about it being infested with rats again. I would never let my kids in - on a hot day it gets all cloudy and you can't see if children have gone underneath (and because it's 18 inch deep lots of parents don't pay attention) - and it's right by a rat infested river - but lots of people love it. Anyway I ended parking at the other end of the nature reserve that runs by the river - fine by me as it's a nice walk. On the way back I spotted this huge moth on what may be giant hogweed - I didn't get too close. The pinkish blur just behind it is a girl in a punt. I was slowly aware that she was loudly making comments about people pointing cameras at her and taking pictures and how rude it was. So I made a bit of a show of looking closely at the moth and took a couple more shots and then vaguely glanced at her just enough to see that she had realised that she wasn't the subject of my photo and felt a little foolish. I felt unnecessarily smug given that I probably did look like I was taking her photo and had a nice chat with a lady trying to fish her dog's ball out of the river instead.
Smug is so good! People take photos with their phones ALL the time and nobody notices! Just because you have a REAL camera one gets all the bad glances! Get real, world! I don't like moths - they blatter into windows but I appreciate the quality of this photo!

How people jump to conclusions ....no wonder you felt smug, she was in a public place so how can they be so diverish! ...the paddling pool sounds horrendous...anything to do with rats & I'm off! We used to get rats in the calf boxes but always had the rat man round every month to put poised down...he really kept them down.
Lovely clear moth & is that giant hogweed...I have heard of it but never seen it before. Must admit I'm not keen on hairy moths either.

Fabulous detail judith and a great study.
With regards to the girl in the punt, it's not illegal to take a picture of somebody in a public place, so if you had wanted to take her , you would have been quite within your rights

lovely focus on the moth - and if it was me, I would have been taking her photo! Those paddling pools are always a bit challenging. I remember a girl going under when I was a child and being resuscitated on the side and have always been a bit wary

It does look extraordinarily large. My daughter almost drowned in that paddling pool years ago for exactly the reasons you set out - it was certainly a lesson well learnt.
