Flood prevention works on the Levels

This photo is taken from Turn Hill at High Ham looking across the levels towards the village of Othery. In the middle of the picture are the current flood prevention works being carried out as part of the Somerset Levels and Moors Flood Action Plan. Four new culverts are being installed on the A372 between Aller and Othery, allowing excess water to pass under the road into Langacre Rhyne. Earlier this year the road was closed for weeks under fast flowing floodwater, and even when the road emerged it had to be closed to accommodate huge pumps as part of the emergency measures to move the water from flooded areas. So right now the road is again closed while the work takes place, which is great for people in Aller in terms of a respite from the constant flow of too-fast traffic and heavy lorries through the village .... but not so good if you need to get somewhere and have to take a very long detour!
Nice shot of the village
