quite a lot of the elms growing in the hedgerows round here have this weird ridged corky bark on the young branches. I thought initially it might be something to do with Dutch Elm disease but on research it is apparently a characteristic of some English Elms as well as several other species of Elm like the Cork Elm. It seems strange because not all the Elms are affected, and not all branches on the same Elm either - the other branches appearing perfectly ordinary and relatively smooth. It really is a very odd phenomenon.
Hi Julienne, beautiful bark, I haven't seen this on our elms, but around here the only ones left are the East Anglian species which are more resistant to Dutch Elm disease. We have some really big ones which are truly magnificent!
