Low Ham Chapel by julienne1

Low Ham Chapel

This chapel is nicknamed "The Church in the Field". Low Ham is a small village just down the hill from where I live in High Ham. The chapel was built in the early 17th Century on the site of an earlier church and was a private family chapel of the Hext and later the Stawell families who lived in a succession of manor houses beside the church. Baron Stawell intended to build an impressive mansion beside this church in the 17th Century but it was never completed and it fell into ruin after his death. So the chapel stands alone in the middle of a field beside a farm surrounded by farm implements and cattle. Church of England services are still held here regularly, though trying to negotiate the unlit, uneven path to the door on a dark winter's night is not for the faint-hearted!
A handsome church and strange indeed to see the farmyard next door.

Nice shot and interesting commentary. The building now stands as a folly, although clearly not intended as such.
