Madder decoration

This is the sign at the entrance of our local nature reserve where I regularly walk my dog. I enjoyed the wild madder draping itself tastefully! Madder is an interesting plant which has sticky stems that cling to the hedgerows. The berries are quite prolific but seem to be a favourite with the birds as they disappear fairly quickly. Madder root can be used to make a lovely red dye and has apparently been in use for over 5000 years, and linen found in Tutankhamen's tomb was found to have traces of madder dye.

Interesting info. I know the roots are used to make the red dye, but I've never seen the plant. The Dutch name is meekrap.

@nitrogene - thanks. It seems right somehow that a nature reserve should have an old wooden sign :)

@aprils - yes it is rather rustic. Makes it fit in so much better

@peterday @christophercox @carla42 @rickster549 - thanks. Madder is an interesting plant but not many people seem to know what it is.
