Lookout duty

Back at the heronry in Swell Wood RSPB reserve this adult grey heron was on the alert because there was a noisy scuffle between a couple of her neighbours close to her nest. It's good to see this alert erect posture rather than the usual hunched-up, almost hang-dog stance they so often adopt. It still seems improbable to see such a large bird perched over 30 metres high in the very top of the tall oak trees.

I like the capture and I'm intrigued by how the shape of the branch to the left of the Heron mimics the bird's neck.. The bird against the backdrop of the blue sky is amazing..

What an awesome shot - have never caught one in a tree though I've seen many pictures posted. Beautiful standing so tall.

The branch behind almost looks like a shadow. Really enjoying your herons

@jeffinvt - thanks. It is unusual to see them against the sky rather than fishing at the side of the rivers and lakes

@milaniet - yes - I'm just lucky enough to live quite close to this ancient heronry where so many of these lovely birds nest way up in the tall trees

@christophercox - thanks, they are rather lovely aren't they! It is odd the way that branch looks like her shadow
