An update on the swan's nest I posted on 8th April http://365project.org/julienne1/365/2016-04-06 right beside the road across the Somerset Levels near Pedwell. She now has 5 lovely cygnets (unless there are more hiding away underneath!) which hatched yesterday evening. The male was guarding his family very well and was hissing loudly at me while I took this photograph and moving towards me rather threateningly! I think he will be relieved when he can move his family off the nest and away from all the interested spectators passing by on the road!
This is a wonderful shot that brings back some scary memories. I was walking along the river from the car park to the shopping precinct. As I came round a bend I saw an enraged swan, wings and neck outstretched, coming for me. Regardless of my white hair I took off and vaulted a wall as though I was still a teenager! When I was safe I looked back and saw he was protecting the cob and his cygnets.
@ceilidh - I had to keep one eye on the male who was advancing threateningly! They are big birds and I wouldn't fancy a hard peck (though the old wive's tale about them breaking people's arms isn't in any way true!)
