This is Ham Wall RSPB nature reserve earlier this evening just before sunset. I went to check out the starling roost situation. There are fairly large numbers roosting there so far. They started coming in at around 4pm in a succession of large flocks which went on for about 30 minutes, but they all went into the reeds as soon as they arrived - so no spectacular murmurations tonight. It's always a joy to hear the beating of thousands of wings as they fly close overhead, soaring at speed over the trees and bushes, and then plummet into the reeds, jostling for position, chattering, arguing and generally making a huge commotion until, gradually, they find the right spot for the night and settle down. The situation wasn't right for any decent photos tonight .... but maybe next time!
