The Heronry at Swell Wood is now a frantic hive of activity as around 100 pairs of grey herons noisily go about the business of tidying up their nests, squabbling with each other, and generally causing a mammoth commotion in the ancient oak trees. It always strikes me as strange that such solitary birds choose to nest together in such large numbers - it's no wonder arguments break out. This heron staring down at me made me think about how a fish might feel looking up towards those weird downward facing yellow eyes and dagger-like beak!
