Star jelly - nostoc commune

This weird cyanobacterium has sprung up overnight in several places. It's gelatinous and a bit like seaweed. It tends to spring up suddenly out of nowhere when there has been a lot of rain and because of this people used to think it was material from shooting stars or "witches butter" as it is sometimes called. Apparently they eat it in the Philippines ....i wouldn't fancy it!
