Adult Caddisfly by julienne1

Adult Caddisfly

I'm more used to seeing the larval stage of this fly - they live underwater and camouflage themselves by sticking tiny stones or bits of twig to their bodies so they do look very comical. I used to catch them as a child and keep them in an aquarium so I could watch them better. They are close relatives of moths and butterflies but they have tiny hairs on their wings rather than scales. Strangely I don't remember seeing an adult before!
A fabulous shot of this species Julienne, I have never seen one before ;-)

My experience is the reverse, I never went pond dipping but do see these at the meadow which has become my spring to autumn haunt.
