Early morning light is quite special and showed off the detail in the dark plumage quite nicely here. I muffed my shots of a trio of these birds flying past last evening so i was happy to get this and one other of it with at least a sharp head and eye. Relying on auto iso might not be so great, i think i might try setting it myself next time, for a higher shutter speed to freeze the wing motion a bit more. I am using av mode with the largest aperture my lens allows . Haven't solved the back-button focus problem as yet, it worked for a bit then stopped :(
I am hosting the latest technique challenge to get my head around the settings and techniques for capturing birds in flight, there is more info here... http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/30556/technique-78-birds-in-flight have a go at capturing birds yourself, wherever you go you are bound to find some.
Fantastic light and panning. You'd laugh, I sat down on a rock at the beach tonight to practice bird panning and and had one of those massive gullls in sight. He was sitting on a rock and I had my camera on him for about 30 minutes waiting for him to fly away and you guessed it, the moment I moved my camera somewhere else, he flew away.......bastard bird..
