terrible but interesting

I went out to try some blue hour shots, for the latest technique challenge https://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/31493/technique-challenge-84-up-and-running in spite of the cloud , I found there was a lot of wind and my tripod is not stable so the images blurred and not in a good cloud movement way , exposures needed to be several minutes and mostly i underestimated so all my shots were very dim in the rapidly dwindling light. the red on the sea is from light pollution off the land, which i found very interesting. I can also see my sensor has a lot of dead pixels! or is it colour noise? convince yourself they are stars if you wish.

It's all information from which something can be learned!

Not terrible, in my humble opinion.

I get those red dots too, usually in the exact same spots of every long exposure. it's just noise. I normally just photoshop them out. most of them are so small that they're not really an issue if I post on Instagram or whatnot.

I like it!

Not terrible at all. Viewed on black, I can definitely see the stars 'twinkling' :)

@yaorenliu @mastermek yeah color field painting for sure.

I'm a little puzzled that a 4 minute exposure at f/4 should be so dark... even after nightfall I wouldn't expect it to be as dark as this and certainly not in the 'blue-hour'. The red spots are caused by heating of the sensor during the long exposure: you can eliminate them by switching on 'long exposure noise reduction' in your camera which will than take a blind exposure of the same duration and cancel out the common elements.

@vignouse there was a lot of cloud cover, in fact it started to rain during this exposure, so blue hour was pretty much done by this time and there is no light out in the Tasman sea, it did seem very long though as i kept trying shorter ones and they were very dark...i was using iso200 rather than a higher one to try to avoid noise, i will look for that setting you mention.

Yes I see stars! Anything that might help me understand what this weeks challenge really means is helpful. @vignouse comment also very helpful (although I'm sure my camera does not have that setting). Thanks for posting.

Hypnotic.

I think it makes a fantastic abstract. I can’t see anything resembling stars but then am viewing on the little squinchy iPod screen.

I really liked the colors and abstract feel to this shot and debated back and forth between it and another one. Thanks for taking part in the challenge!
