my setup was simply near a window with bright sunshine coming in, but facing into a corner which was dark, the light hits the smoke but not the background . it was hit and miss for me getting focus right and multi shot to try and capture something nice,,,, holding the incense and the camera at the same time is not easy lol.
there is a ton of post-processing done as well, in RAW to darken the background further and bring out detail , turn to black and white, invert , then colour filter over the top....
