Abraham Lincoln is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. This is the monument that marks the place where his casket is buried ten feet underground. After thieves tried to steal Lincoln's body for ransom in 1876, Robert Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's son, arranged for his father's coffin to be reburied ten feet below ground with the coffin inside of a vault, which is encased in a steel frame and buried in concrete. The thieves actually managed to get the coffin partially out of the sarcophagus before they were caught in the act.
